Bruno’s Donates 3 Tons to BARC! Pet Food Pantry

Bruno’s Donates 3 Tons to BARC! Pet Food Pantry

Bruno's stores made it easy for the community to donate to the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) Pet Food Pantry during a recent 6-week promotion. Customers purchased specially-packaged bags that contained a bag of dog food and a bag of cat food for $5.00.

In 2011, the Bruno's Fairhope, Spanish Fort and Gulf Shores stores sold 442 specially-packaged bags for a grand total of 3,500 pounds of dog and cat food for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry. That surpassed 2010’s collection of 2,900 pounds. Combined, that’s more than 3 tons!

"The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is funded soley by donations" remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director. “Bruno’s customers are amazing with 20% more donated during the 2011 promotion. The employees do a fabulous job letting their shoppers know about the $5 specially-packaged bags of dog and cat food.”

The BARC! Pet Food Pantry was established in April 2010 to assist income-eligible families with food for their dogs and cats to make sure families can keep them. It is one of the five primary programs of the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!). Others are Kitten Kaboodles, dog adoption/transport, Pawsitive Therapy and low cost spay/neuter vouchers.

BARC! Pet Food Pantry accepts any brand of dog or cat food and treats. If you would like to organize a pet food collection in your school, neighborhood, church or business, call 251.928.4585 or visit www.BaldwinHumane.org.

The 1,000 cans of cat food was divided between the two EMI locations; it will be enough for a month or more’s distribution.

"The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is funded soley by donations" remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director. "Our gratitude is boundless to Cory Stanfield, Petsense Outlet Manager, for making such a significant donation."

Tyndall CARES Contributes to BARC! Pet Food Pantry

The new Spanish Fort branch of Tyndall Federal Credit Union bought 1,000 pounds of dog and cat food for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry.
“Tyndall Federal Credit Union was very honored to help such a deserving organization in the Eastern Shore area” remarked Jessica Wimmer, Advertising and Promotion Specialist. We feel that BARC! Pet Food Pantry does a wonderful service for the community and gives so much of their time, funds and efforts to help the less fortunate. After meeting their volunteers, we are very impressed by all that they do, and hope to build a lasting relationship far into the future.”
The pet food purchase was through the Tyndall CARES program that helps communities. It was the equivalent of one day’s distribution that BARC! does on Tuesdays at Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort.
The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is one of the five primary programs of the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!). Others are Kitten Kaboodles, dog adoption/transport, Pawsitive Therapy and spay/neuter vouchers.
Maddie Temonia, volunteer program coordinator for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry stated “We have been so fortunate by the support of our community and local businesses, having Tyndall CARES in our family of supporters makes our ability to help local families even more possible.”
The BARC! Pet Food Pantry is funded solely by donations. They accept any brand of dog or cat food and treats. To make an online donation, visit www.BaldwinHumane.org.

Animal shelters are full, foreclosures are prevalent and pet parents are having to make tough, heart-breaking decisions they never thought they would have to make. To alleviate that, the Lillian Women’s Club held a collection for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry.

Accepting the donation was Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director, who was the guest speaker at their March luncheon. She explained the primary programs of the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) are Kitten Kaboodles, dog adoption/transport, Pawsitive Therapy, spay/neuter and the pet food pantry.

Presley thanked the ladies “You’ve ensured that our community's companion animals won’t go hungry -- one of the most basic, and most critical, aspects of animal welfare.”

They accept any brand of dog or cat food and treats.  If you would like to organize a pet food collection in your school, neighborhood, church or business, call the BARC! Six-year old Briggs Acton of Montrose said Santa had brought him everything, so recently when it was his birthday he asked his friends to bring pet food instead of presents. While other children his age count the birthday cards and gifts after their parties, Briggs counted the bags of dog and cat food that his 16 friends from the Fairhope K-1 Center brought for the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!).

The Baldwin County Humane Society volunteers for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry were doing their normal Monday collecting of food in January 2011 when Tractor Supply Company (TSC) in Robertsdale had 600+ pounds of food to donate.

"My volunteers Evelyn Jerkins and Linda Mogren were in the right place at the right time" stated Maddie Temonia, BARC! Pet Food Pantry Coordinator. "Due to dwindling donations this was like getting a late Christmas present. We average giving away 1,127 pounds of pet food each Tuesday we’re on-site at Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort. TSC has donated the equivalent of half of a day’s distribution.”

"The food suppliers were making changes to their product line which afforded Tractor Supply Company the ability to donate surplus food to BARC! Pet Food Pantry" said Wendy Schneeflock, TSC receiver. Pet Food Pantry received 1,429 pounds of dog and cat food from Fairhope resident Francoise Lenzi.  She  remarked “Our cat and miniature Dachsunds are all rescues so I know the important work BARC! does. I get more pleasure from donating pet food than buying a pair of shoes.” “We are so grateful to Francoise” commented Maddie Temonia, BARC! Pet Food Pantry Coordinator. “We average giving away 1,127 pounds of pet food each Tuesday we’re on-site at Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort. Francoise has donated the equivalent of a day’s distribution.”

"We'd also like to thank Clark Stewart with WHEP 1310AM and 92.5FM for inviting us to do a live remote during Power of Giving" continued Presley. "People brought donations because they heard it on the radio."

'Little' Lillian Delivers Big

For over two weeks the Lillian Post Office and its employees brought a lot of attention to the Baldwin County Humane Society and to our food pantry project. Their event was kicked off by a day of fun and festivities with homemade goodies and refreshments donated by local businesses. It also marked the start of a pet photo contest. People were eager to share their beloved pet and the walls were soon covered with photos. Prizes were donated by local businesses.

This was all done in conjunction with the release of the shelter pet stamps by the US Postal Service to raise awareness and increase adoption of pets from shelters. Little Lillian sold 11,000 of the stamps and collected 700 pounds of pet food!

Thanks so much to Acting Postmaster, Dixie Nolte, the post office staff and all in the community of Lillian who supported this event! We appreciate all the hard work. Special thanks go to Lillian Veterinary Hospital, Lillian Pharmacy, Lillian Pet Grooming, Dollar General of Lillian, Florabama Title, Lillian Chevron, Dominoes of Perdido, Palmetto Creek Dental, Ms. Sauvez, and employees of Build a Bear at the Wharf for all their contributions.

WORLD FAMOUS FRISBEE DOGS COLLECTED PET FOOD JUNE 18-20, 2010

The Disc-Connected K-9s World Famous Frisbee Dogs collected for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry at the 6th Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. Pictured, from left: Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director with the team from Disc-Connected K-9s, Lawrence Frederick, Jodi Frederick and Easy Rider, "The Flippin Frisbee Dog" who finished 3rd at Skyhoundz World Championships and 4th at the AWI World Finals in 2008.  Photo courtesy of Ditto Gorme.

Lawrence and Jodi Frederick and their World Famous Frisbee Dogs, the Disc-Connected K-9s, are collecting for the BARC! Pet Food Pantry at the 6th Annual Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival.

The dogs have provided Frisbee Dog entertainment around the world and have performed for some of the most amazing audiences. In addition, 7 of their dogs are World Frisbee Dog Championships Finalists; more than any other team in the history of the sport!

As amazing ... every one of the dogs is rescued from either a shelter or a puppy mill.  Before each dog's performance, Lawrence tells the audience about the dog's beginnings.  He reminds the people how important it is to support the local animal welfare agencies.

The Fredericks were in awe when they learned that the BARC! Pet Food Pantry has given away 6,805 pounds of food to 1,710 dog and cats since it launched in May 2010.  Naturally, while they are in Baldwin County, they wanted to contribute.

The community is asked to bring dog food, cat food and cat litter and put in the official blue BARC! Pet Food Pantry collection box at the Disc-Connected K-9s tent at anytime during the weekend of the Hot Air Balloon Fesitval.

The choreographed shows of these rescued dogs making flying leaps and Frisbee catches will entertain the entire family. The Disc-Connected K-9s shows are free to the public.  Their 2010 schedule is:  Friday, June 18th at 10am, 2pm and 6pm.  Saturday, June 19th at 7:30am, 3pm and 6pm.  Sunday, June 20th at 7:30am.

The festival is held at the Foley Sportspark, 18507 Hwy. 98 W. Click here for directions to the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival

4-H JUBILEE

Henry Lewis McDuffy III wrote a letter to his Spanish Fort neighbors explaining his 4-H service project was to collect supplies for the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) Pet Food Pantry. He attached the letter to a bag, went door-to-door and returned in a couple of days to pick them up.

At the recent 4-H Jubilee held at Farmers Federation Building in Robertsdale, McDuffy presented Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director, with 40 bags filled with dog and cat food, toys, litter and $50 cash donation to the BARC! Pet Food Pantry.

MfDuffy's dad remarked “We don't even own a dog or a cat; even so, Henry Lewis wanted to help the animals.”

Everyone was in awe of the initiative the 4-H Spanish Fort Middle School Charter student showed with his service project.
