Rep McMillan Discusses Proposed Bill with Animal Advocates
Representative Stephen McMillan with the Alabama State Legislature 95th District (Baldwin) met with animal advocates on September 2, 2010, to discuss the proposed bills to eliminate the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers in Alabama animal facilities.
Participating in the discussion were August “Gus“ Palumbo, Daphne City Councilman District 7, and the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) -- Kathy Murchison, volunteer; Wendy Vogel, Board Member and Sonja Presley, Executive Director.
Sandra Nathan with Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation (AVRAL) compared their proposed bill with the bill by the Alabama Humane Federation.
Representative McMillan, who is comparing the language in each bill, stated “One bill is preferred. We need to agree on the language that will adequately offer some protection and assurance of humane euthanasia in injection methods allowed.”
Palumbo was instrumental in removing the Daphne City Animal Shelter‘s gas chamber in 2007. Palumbo summarized this meeting with “Every rescue group -- big and small -- and every animal advocate needs to unite and make a difference.”
Presley agreed. “Collectively, our voice is very powerful. That‘s why everyone needs to attend the grass roots meeting on September 23 at the Fairhope Civic Center. BARC! Is co-hosting this meeting with The Haven to further protection of the animals, whether through legislation or corporate and public policy.”
Mindy Gilbert, Alabama State Director for the Humane Society of the United States, is the guest speaker. The meeting is free to the public; for more information visit www.BaldwinHumane.org or call 251.928.4585.
