BARC! Inducts Shelby Mitchell as Honorary Board Member
The Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) inducted Shelby Mitchell as Honorary Board Member at the September 15, 2010, board meeting.
Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director, commented “Mitchell is renowned for her community involvement with charitable organizations both personally and professionally. On Mitchell’s Kanine & Kitty Korner on www.95KSJ.com, she promotes all animal welfare agencies and assists locating lost pets. She’s also an avid supporter of the BARC! Pet Food Pantry.”
A lifelong lover of animals, she referred to her Yorkies Cocoa and Makayla as “her furry children.”
Mitchell just celebrated 20 years in the radio business and is part of the well-known duo “Dan & Shelby” of the WKSJ Breakfast Club who are the recipients for eight consecutive years of the Mobile Register’s Readers’ Choice Achievement Award. She has been nationally nominated for both a CMA and ACM award.
She’s a Gulf Coast native who graduated from Greystone Christian School then the University of South Alabama with a double major in communication and English. Mitchell currently resides in Spanish Fort.
She is a board member for Making Miracles for Cystic Fibrosis, a committee member for Child Advocacy Center, active with the Mobile Baykeepers and participates with the Mobile Fire Department Triathlon Team.
When Mitchell isn’t working on-air, she loves outdoor sports, reading, scenic drives, live music, and “acting goofy.” Hang gliding and parachuting are on her to-do list.
Mitchell remarked “I am excited about becoming a BARC! Honorary Board Member because of the positive effects pets have had on me my whole life. I believe that a house is not a home without the love and joy of an animal. They are so important. They need people to speak up for them when they can’t...and I have a big mouth!”
One of her first official duties is to record the system greeting on the BARC! office phone 251.928.4585.

Board Member of the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!)
Willie Bean The Political Watchdog gained notoriety last year when he ran for Mayor of Fairhope, Alabama, and
subsequently President.
pages have thousands of friends who regularly blog with Willie.
Willie Bean caught the ceremonial first pitch at a Mobile Bay Bears game and caught the ear of Late Night with David Letterman. He received letters and visits from Sweden, Brazil and Italy; and appeared twice on MTV Canada to help choose their candidates for Prime Minister by licking their photos.
Just this week CoastalAlabamaTV.com interviewed Willie as a potential candidate for a future U.S. House of
Representatives seat.
What Willie Bean is most known for, though, is his love of kids around the Eastern Shore. He leads the First Friday
Fun Walks at Fairhope Intermediate.
Tress Turner, his owner, has always been a staunch supporter of the spay/neuter program offered through BARC! She donated portions of Willie Bean’s campaign contributions to BARC! and attends many of their events.
“Tress and Willie’s community involvement in Baldwin County is why BARC! approached Turner about Willie Bean
serving as an Honorary Board Member” said Gwynn. “As an animal welfare organization, we felt our human
directors would benefit from having a canine prospective. And, best of all, Willie is adamant that he will not only
represent other canines, but cats and other creatures BARC! works to protect.”
Recently BARC! Board Members met Willie Bean at his campaign headquarters (The Coffee Loft in Fairhope, Alabama) to induct him. Immediately following, Willie Bean gave a crowd-pleasing acceptance speech by licking Maria Gwynn, President, and Prima Plauche’ newly-appointed Board Member.
